A Conversation with Mike McGraw of Baylor Men's Golf

Updated: Jul 16

I was fortunate enough to talk with renowned college golf coach Mike McGraw. Our conversation was rich and insightful. We explored my journey and passion for golf, revisiting my junior golf days and over 20 years of competitive play.

A Deep Dive into Strokes Gained

My enthusiasm for strokes gained data stems from my experiences on the Korn Ferry Tour and during my time at Georgia Tech. Golf is often seen as a simple game, but it is anything but. Understanding the intricacies of data can be a game changer.

When we rely solely on app summaries, we might miss critical insights. Small percentages can accumulate and lead to significant differences in outcomes. This is particularly true in golf, where every stroke matters.

The Journey of a Golfer

Looking back, my time at Georgia Tech was instrumental. I was recruited by Hall of Fame coach Bruce Heppler. It was an honor to learn and grow under such a celebrated figure in the sport. Competing in ACC championship matches sharpened my skills and ignited my passion even further.

Transitioning to the professional circuit can be demanding. The Korn Ferry Tour is no easy feat. But it taught me resilience and the importance of continuous improvement. Adapting to professional golf required a new mindset—a balance between physical prowess and analytical thinking.

Embracing Analytics in Golf

During our conversation, we discussed how young players and coaches can leverage data to lower their scores. Analytics in golf is not just a trend; it's a vital tool. Being a "strokes-gained nerd" has opened doors for me. It can do the same for others.

Understanding where to improve is critical. Players must embrace data and use it wisely. The game is evolving, and those who harness analytics will have a competitive edge.

The future of golf lies in its ability to adapt. Embracing new techniques and technology will keep the sport dynamic. As golfers, we must remain open to change while respecting the game's traditions.
